How to Create an illustration/picture labeled in MLA style

(McKennon instruction)

This tutorial created by student Dane Johnson-Mt. San Antonio College

  1. Locate an image that you want to use in your paper

  2. The source (which you will use in a bit) is located in the address bar of your browser

  3. This particular image does not contains a title so I use what is given to me (The Text in the image)

  4. The next step is to get this picture into an image editor (for this example I will be using Microsoft Paint). Right Click on the image and select “Copy Image”

  1. The Next step is to Crop the Image. Do this by clicking the Select Tool

  1. Click and Drag the cursor so that it encompasses what you want

  1. Click the Crop button

  1. You should end up with just the image showing

  1. At the bottom of the image you will notice a white square

  1. Click and Drag this square down in order to create white space

    beneath the image

  1. Click the Text Box Button

  1. Click beneath the picture and align the box so that it touches the

bottom of the picture and the left of the screen

  1. Use the White Boxes around the text box to expand the text

box so it appears like the one below

  1. Type in the information using the Title and Source we gathered

from steps 2 and 3. Finish by click anywhere outside the text box

  1. Click and Drag the bottom White Square upward to get rid of the

remaining white space (Opposite of Step 9 and 10). Save the Image

    when done

Now that we have a properly cited image, we can insert it into our Word Document. (CONTINUE ON NEXT PAGE)

  1. Open your word document

  2. Click on the Insert Tab at the top of the Word Program

  1. Click on the Pictures Button

  1. Select the Picture you saved then click Insert

  1. Right Click on the image and select Size and Position

  1. Enter in the height and width you want (Make sure to select “Lock

    Aspect Ratio)

  1. Left Click on the image then click the Format Tab

  1. Click on the Position Button

  1. Select a Position for the Image relative to the Text

  1. Align the picture by dragging it and placing it where you want it to

    go

That is how you embedded a cited picture into your paper!
