  • A summary is a concise statement, in one's own words, of another, longer document, usually an article.
  • I must communicate the accurate meaning of the original
  • It MUST NOT contain your opinion or views on the original
  • It must first introduce the original author by full name and full title of the text, properly punctuated (ex: use quotation marks around articles/essays or italicize titles of books)
  • It must identify the main idea and purpose of the original
  • It must contain the main points and TYPE of evidence used
  • It will NOT contain the supporting points
  • It will identify the origianl author's concluding message (what he/she wants the reader to take away)
